The Villa Lindenhof is an upper-class house with outbuildings in Herrlingen near Ulm , which is used culturally today. The villa is surrounded by a large park and embodies a total work of art of Art Nouveau that is well thought out in all parts .

history

Because of its proximity to the city of Ulm and its beautiful location, Herrlingen has been a preferred summer retreat for wealthy Ulm citizens since the middle of the 19th century , who had country houses built there as "summer residences". This also included the owner of the Wieland works , the entrepreneur Max Robert Wieland , son of the Ulm art and bell founder Philipp Jakob Wieland . In 1904 he commissioned the well-known Munich architect Richard Riemerschmid to design and build a villa for the site in Herrlingen. The stately ensemble with an attached kitchen, a bowling alley, gatehouse, coach house and horse stable was ready for occupancy in 1906. Riemerschmid was also responsible for the entire interior and furnishing of the villa. In 1919 the landlord commissioned the sculptor Wilhelm Nida-Rümelin to design several sculptures to embellish the building.

The poet Gertrud Kantorowicz lived in Herrlingen from 1920 to 1926 .

The reform pedagogue Anna Essinger ran a country school home , ie a private school , from 1926 to 1933 . Since this school was mainly attended by Jewish children, Anna Essinger moved the entire school to England in 1933.

In 1933 the Jewish country school home was founded in the same building, which was managed by Hugo Rosenthal .

In 1947 the writers of Gruppe 47 met in Herrlingen.

After 1945 a school was set up in Lindenhof . In 1972 the ensemble was almost demolished. Between 1989 and 2018 there was a museum about Field Marshal Rommel in the villa .
