The Villa Malta is a castle-like villa in Cologne district of Rodenkirchen , built in 1904-05. It is located in a defining position directly above the banks of the Rhine (Rodenkirchener Leinpfad) on the main road (house number 11). The villa stands as a monument under monument protection .

history

The villa was built in 1904/05 under the name “Villa Antonia” for the builder Eduard Steisel, then mayor of the municipality of Rondorf (later “Rodenkirchen”), based on a design by the architects Gebrüder (Fritz and Karl) Schauppmeyer. Steisel's Belgian wife Angonia contributed significantly to the financing of the building project, she was the reason for the naming and the specific design of the villa. Originally it had a symbolic moat . At the end of 1919, the factory owner Heinrich Rodenkirchen acquired the Steisel property.

After the Second World War at the latest , the house was renamed "Villa Maria". After 1963, the Institute for Applied Ergonomics , which was founded at the time, was located here before the villa stood empty for several years. In 1971 it became the property of the Order of Malta , which gave it its current name. In connection with the new use of the villa, a parking lot was created in place of the moat. After the Order of Malta gave up its location in the villa in 1985, it was divided into condominiums and converted from 1986 onwards. The building was entered in the city of Cologne's list of monuments on October 22, 1986.

architecture

Stylistically, the villa can be assigned to Art Nouveau , which draws on a medieval design language . The Belgian origin of the client's wife, which has been incorporated into the design of the villa, is mainly reflected in a striking tower, which is partly modeled on the belfry of the Cloth Hall in Ypres . The name of the villa is written in large letters on the Rhine front of the tower. One of the special features of the interior design is a gallery on the upper floor, which, following the example of Greek temples, includes columns and metopes of the Doric order as well as ancient motifs.
