history

On July 9, 1962, the general assembly of the General Association of Employers' Associations of the Metal and Electrical Industry e. V. to found an independent ergonomic institute. The ifaa Institute for Applied Ergonomics started its work in April 1963. The main focus of the work was the development of flawless and practically usable methods for work preparation , production control and remuneration as well as the recording, deepening and dissemination of the collected and developed ideas through documentation and through the dissemination of knowledge to the member associations. Until 1973 the seat of the institute was in Rodenkirchen near Cologne (temporarily in the Villa Malta ), then until September 2008 in Cologne-Marienburg . In September 2008 the head office was relocated to Düsseldorf.

Research and Development

The ifaa is responsible for operational ergonomics and operational organization. The aim of the ifaa is primarily to increase productivity in companies. The institute thus makes a contribution to the competitiveness of the German economy. Particular emphasis is placed on the close interlinking of science and practice. The ifaa analyzes operational processes, explores causal relationships, shows developments in work and operational organization and develops company-relevant and tried-and-tested products and services. This takes place in cooperation with the associations of the metal and electrical industry - on whose behalf the ifaa acts - as well as in very close contact with operational practice. New trends in ergonomics and industrial engineering as well as economic globalization effects are forcing companies to undergo rapid structural change with the aim of maintaining and improving the competitiveness of operational processes. The ifaa develops solutions for the associations and companies in order to cope with the constant structural change successfully and sustainably.

Publications

The ifaa actively participates in the ergonomic discussion by means of specially created publications in the form of magazines, books and congress reports. The specialist journal “Betriebspraxis und Arbeitsforschung”, which appears three times a year, deals with current topics in ergonomics and company organization. The latest research results as well as good practice examples from companies are presented. In addition, ifaa publishes practical guides and trend-setting studies. It is aimed at specialists and managers, employers' associations in the metal and electrical industry and scientists. These deal with ergonomic topics in theory and practice. The ifaa fact sheets on individual ergonomic topics are new to the portfolio. For example fact sheet Generation Y.

In order to systematically and regularly record, evaluate and inform interested groups of the various different aspects of the topics in the world of work, the Institute for Applied Work Sciences eV initiated the ifaa Work World Trend Barometer in May 2009. Twice a year, representatives from the economy, the associations and the (labor) science and company organization ( industrial engineering ) are asked about the importance of selected topics in ergonomics and company organization. The current evaluations are published on the institute's website and in the journal “Betriebspraxis und Arbeitsforschung”.
