Magistrale

Villa Margherita is the name of a public park in the Sicilian port city of Trapani . It was laid out in 1878, shortly after the kingdom was founded, on the initiative of the city administration under its then mayor Henry Fardella . The park is dedicated to Margaret of Italy , who became Queen of Italy in January 1878. It has been open to the public since 1889.

At this point there was previously a fort that protected the old town of Trapani from the hostile hinterland.

The park in a rectangular shape is located between the old town with its winding alleys and the planned new town with a rectangular structure, one block from the train station . The park extends in a north-south direction and is surrounded by a high fence. It is closed when it is dark. The lengths of the outer edges are a good 100 × 200 meters, the area is 21,000 m 2 . There is an entrance exactly in the middle on all four sides. The main access is on Viale Regina Margherita, which runs to the north .

There are many old, rare plants in the park that are well cared for by the community. For example, right in the center there are four large, large -leaved fig trees grouped around a free space , the crowns of which extend from one side to the other of the entire park, with a crown diameter of 50 m. The central free space is completely crowned by branches of these four trees. These trees were very popular when they were planted and had been cultivated in Palermo since the early 1800s .

At the south end of the park is an open-air theater that can seat up to 2500 people. Also in the back of the park are five pillars that were incorporated into the planting and that belonged to the Teatro Garibaldi , which was destroyed in World War II. In many places in the park there are marble busts that remind of famous people of the city. In addition to the flora, the park is also home to a rich flock of birds, only some of which are kept in aviaries .
