Villa Romana di Patti
The Villa Romana di Patti is an archaeological site in the form of an ancient Roman villa in Patti , the metropolitan city of Messina in Sicily .
General
During the construction of the A20 motorway between Messina and Palermo , the remains of a Roman villa were discovered. The site has been estimated to cover an area of 20,000 m² through tests. This makes the area of the Villa di Patti larger than that of the Villa Romana del Casale near the city of Piazza Armerina . Today the villa is under a bridge over the motorway.
history
The villa was built in the 3rd century. But it was abandoned in the 4th century. At the end of the 4th century the villa was finally destroyed by an earthquake. In the 6th and 7th centuries, the buildings were partially inhabited again after the buildings were partially restored. In the 10th and 11th centuries the area was still used as a cemetery.
The Villa
The floors of the villa are covered with mosaics . The main motif of the mosaics are geometric patterns. Pets are also shown, for example in a large hall. The excavations and the construction of collapsed walls are still ongoing.
