Villa Rustica (Colesbourne)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Villa Rustica near Colesbourne (also often referred to as Combend villa or Comb End villa ) is a former Roman estate ( Villa rustica ) . It was on Combend Farm near Stockwood in what is now Gloucestershire in England . In 1779 and 1787 parts of the villa were used as a quarry, after which Samuel Lysons at least recorded the finds. In 1794 he excavated parts of the villa and found various mosaics . His excavations focused on individual rooms. An overall plan of the villa is therefore not possible. A total of five buildings are known. At least seven rooms were decorated with geometric mosaics. The main house of the villa had a portico with a mosaic, only the portico was excavated. Coins from the villa date back to the first half of the fourth century.
