The Fuhrmannsstein , also known as Fuhrmannstein , is a late medieval stone cross in the community-free area of Forst Tennenlohe in the central Franconian district of Erlangen-Höchstadt .

Location

The stone cross is in the Eichenloh forest department , southeast of Tennenlohe and near the border with the Neunhofer Forest .

description

The approximately 1.75 meter high carter stone consists of the castle sandstone that occurs in the area . The hall monument in the form of a Latin cross of irregular dimensions is a maximum of about one meter wide and about 30 centimeters thick.

history

The original meaning of the stone cross is unknown. It got its name from repeated mentions in connection with attacks on Nuremberg merchants:

“At the stone cross in front of Tennenlohe, Christoph v. Leinigen, captain of Lauf , captured three Nuremberg residents in 1421 and robbed them of their belongings. Had to surrender the prisoners because they paid for themselves unmarried. "

- 1421

“At the stone cross near Tennenlohe, the fat Michel, a carter who had hid Hannsen Stein at the inn in Tennenlohe, who was also a captain, was attacked by three robbers. A few days earlier, at the same cross, another carter who was going to Nuremberg attacked three naked or badly dressed robbers late in the evening and stole all carter possessions. "

- 1584

The current location of the stone cross does not correspond to the original location of the installation. Until the autumn of 1978 it was located further west within the northern Tennenlohe exit of federal motorway 3 . In the course of the four-lane expansion of federal highway 4 , it was badly damaged. In order to save the cross from complete destruction, it was moved to today's forest adventure center in Tennenlohe and restored. The Fuhrmannsstein was later built at its current location.
