Villa Rustica (Engleton)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 1937 the remains of a Roman villa rustica were excavated near Engleton Hall (County of Staffordshire , England ) . It is located on the Penk , about 400 meters south of Watling Street and near the ancient site of Pennocrucium . Because of its proximity to the city, it has been assumed that a senior city official resided in the villa.

The villa had two rounded corner projections on the front (in the west) and a kind of porch with columns in between. In the south, at the rear, there were remains of a bathing wing. At least the tepidarium was heated by a hypocaust . A hypocaust was also found in the northern one of the corner projections, while the southern one could not be heated. Three construction phases could be distinguished. The bathroom in particular seems to be a later extension, as it is not located within the actual structure of the villa, but is attached to the rear. The oldest building of the villa dates back to the second century. The villa was inhabited until the fourth century.
