Norbert Sternmut
Norbert Sternmut (* 6. March 1958 as Norbert Schmid in Stuttgart ) is a German writer and painter .
Youth and education
Sternmut was born in Stuttgart as the fifth of six children. His father, a barn thresher, died when Sternmut was eleven years old. According to her own statements, childhood and adolescence were mainly characterized by disappointments and privations. After secondary school in Gerlingen (Breitwiesenschule) he did an apprenticeship as a toolmaker at the Trumpf company in Ditzingen , and then on the second educational path at the Technical Oberschule (TO) in Stuttgart, the subject-specific and later with the acquisition of the small Latinum, the general university entrance qualification acquire. At first he wanted to study mechanical engineering, but in 1979 he fell ill with cancer and after recovering from his illness decided to study social pedagogy and to become an artist and writer. He studied social pedagogy at the Fachhochschule für Sozialwesen in Esslingen and graduated with a diploma. He works within the technical school for social pedagogy on the training of educators, he is also school social worker at a private grammar school and a private secondary school.
Artistic and literary work
He had his first major exhibition as a painter (oil paintings, ink drawings, etchings ) in the Gerlingen City Library in 1996. In literary terms, he found in Kurt Rüdiger (1913–1990), the then editor of the Yearbook of German Poetry since 1980, a sponsor and teacher, with whom Sternmut had a long-standing friendship until his death.
In 1989 the volume of poetry Sprachschatten was published , with which the foundation stone for further work was laid. From this point in time until today, plays, volumes of poetry and from 1999 novels , essays and reviews with Der Tote im Park have appeared at regular intervals .
In 2014 Sternmut presented as a painter at the invitation of the KulturRegion Stuttgart and the city of Ludwigsburg for the first time pictures and a triptych from his series The Words on socio-political, sociological and philosophical questions. It is a series of oil and acrylic paintings , some in large formats, as a combination of word and image, color and symbols, based on Sternmut's poetry language.
In 2015, as part of the 8th Ludwigsburg Literature Festival, the Eremitage magazine was presented with pictures from the Sternmut series of works, The Words .
From 2019 onwards, Sternmut showed mostly large-format pictures under the title "Wortbilder - Sprachschatten" in the work show # 8 of the Ludwigsburg district hall. In line with his volume of poetry from 1989, these works are attempts to penetrate the "language shadows" in order to track down realities there that are beyond semantic comprehensibility, according to the organizer of the exhibition "Art in the District House". The triptychs "Expulsion" and "The Myth of Sisyphus" are exhibited in this context. In further pictures, ink drawings and etchings from the years 1983 to 1990 the connections between word and picture are made clear in the form of fragments, color symbols, up to clear verbalization as a particularly highly developed form of symbol formation according to Sternmut. In December 2019, one of the Sternmut pictures in this exhibition - a symbolic Jesus figure, with oil paint on canvas - was willfully torn up.
Projects
Sternmut also repeatedly combined art and social work in various projects with a writing workshop, theater group, and RAP musical project. He worked with the long-term unemployed or young people in preparation for a career, artistically and pedagogically. In 2000 the play “Training Center” was created in a theater project together with the unemployed, in which the unemployed played themselves and the content of the play was worked out in a joint process. The content of the play is the organized handling of the unemployed and unemployment in the state, by the state.
Another theater project in which young trainees specified the characters and content was carried out in 2001 ( Metallica ). Here, in the process of theater work, radical right-wing ideas were dealt with, whereby the young people formed themselves to actively revolt against the right. Here too, Sternmut was primarily concerned with the pedagogical learning process towards clearly recognizable approaches to action and thinking. The characters each played themselves.
In 2009 Sternmut founded the literature group "Sternmut-Literatur-Bunt" (SMLB). SMLB wants to "inspire young people for literature, art and culture, encourage and challenge the next generation" through monthly meetings and cultural events in the Villa Barock in Ludwigsburg. Literature, but also other art, can be presented and topics from art, philosophy, psychology and politics are discussed. SMLB is presented at the Ludwigsburg Literature Festival with a stand and its own events.
"Sternmut-Literatur-Bunt" has been presented since 2015 with articles and information on the events, as well as new books and pictures on the projects page meinlb.de of the city of Ludwigsburg.
The project (2015/2016) on the subject of traumatization, which was presented at the closing of the exhibition Werkschau # 8 in Ludwigsburg, deals with work with severely traumatized children and adolescents in a dormitory. In 2020 the book "Winterdienst" was published, which describes everyday life and the background of the work in prose and poetry.
In 2017, the literary magazine BAWÜLON , published by Pop Verlag , dedicated an issue to the literary group "Sternmut-Literatur-Bunt" in which, in addition to reviews and an interview, Sternmut's pictures can be seen.
