from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Villa Rustica von Kloten is the remains of a Roman estate near Kloten in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland .

The hallway in which the remains of the villa are located is known as the Treasure Buck, which indicates that objects have repeatedly come to light here. In 1724 several mosaics were uncovered. In 1837 parts of the manor house and a bath were excavated. Systematic excavations took place between 1969 and 1979. The walls of the bath and the manor house were preserved.

The remains of the villa complex extend over an area of about 250 × 200 meters. The mansion is to the north on a terrace. It was built around AD 50. Seven renovation phases were identified. In the last phase the building was about 49 × 40 meters and had a peristyle in the center . The outside of the villa was probably decorated with a portico . There was a bathing wing on the northwest side. Various rooms were furnished with mosaics, hypocausts and wall paintings. The mosaics were already destroyed during the last excavations. Only a small fragment could be recovered in the bath wing. Another bathroom was located northwest of the manor house. This building was also richly decorated with mosaics, wall paintings and hypocausts. The walls were partially covered with Jura marble . The whole villa complex was once surrounded by a wall. There were remains of various farm buildings. The villa was abandoned in the early fourth century.
