Chasa rumantscha in Chur

The Chasa rumantscha is a villa on Plessurstrasse in Chur , Switzerland . The building is owned by the “Fundaziun Chasa Rumantscha” and is considered the center of Rhaeto-Romanic Switzerland. It serves as the seat of the Lia Rumantscha , the umbrella organization of the Rhaeto-Romanic associations.

The Chasa Rumantscha was built in 1861 as a villa "Zur Heimat" by the Chur merchant and mayor Johann Rudolf Wassali . The architect of the building is unknown. The rectangular building was built in the "romantic late classicism " style. Around 1900 the stairwell in particular was redecorated in Art Nouveau style . In addition to the offices, warehouse and event rooms of the Lia Rumantscha, there is a public bookshop on the ground floor. The Lia Rumantscha has been using the building since 1944, which previously served as a private residence. In 2011 it underwent a major renovation.
