Vincent Magro (born July 24, 1952 in Valletta ) is a former Maltese football player on the position of a striker . Also known by the nicknames Vince and Maxi , the player was one of the few talents in Maltese football of the 1970s.

Life

society

Magro began his career in the youth department of his home club Valletta Vanguards and at the beginning of his professional career switched to the neighboring club FC Valletta , which is represented in the top division , where he was under contract from 1969 to 1984 and experienced the best years of his football career. In his total of 15 years with the Citizens , he won four championship titles and reached the final of the Maltese Cup four times in a row between 1974/75 and 1977/78 , which the team won three times.

After he had his prime with FC Valletta between 1973 and 1980 (in that period the championship and the cup were won three times), an injury forced him to take a longer break in the 1980/81 season. Because he did not find his way back to his old form for a long time after recovery, he was loaned to the second division club Msida St Joseph for the 1981/82 season. Although he came back to Valletta FC in the following 1982/83 season and won another league title with the team in 1983/84, his best years were over and after winning the title, Magro moved to the third division Luxol St. Andrews before starting his active career ended in the 1987/88 season with the Santa Venera Lightnings also playing in the third division .

National team

Magro made his debut for the Maltese national team in a friendly against Canada on September 28, 1973, which was won 2-0. He made a total of 24 missions for his home country and scored two goals. His first international goal was the highly regarded goal for the 2-0 final against Greece on February 23, 1975, through which the Hellenes were decisively thrown back against the German national team in qualifying for the 1976 European Championship . His other international goal he scored on November 24, 1976 in a friendly against Tunisia, which ended 1-1. Magro completed his last international match on October 28, 1979 as part of qualifying for the 1980 European Championship finals against Turkey (1: 2). All of the above games were played on the legendary hard court of the Empire Stadium Gzira , where a total of twelve international matches - and thus exactly half of the games - took place with Magros' participation.
