The VinziDorf Hospice of Elisabethinen is a hospice for homeless people in Graz . It is operated by the Elisabethinen Hospital in Graz. It was opened on April 5, 2017 and is the first hospice specifically for homeless people in Austria.

history

In Elisabethinen Hospital is one since 1998 palliative care unit . On May 8, 2015, Mother Bonaventura Holzmann , General Superior of the Convent of the Elisabethinen Graz, announced at a charity evening in the Helmut-List-Halle that the Elisabethinen would build a hospice for seriously ill homeless people so that they could be spared hospital stays in the last phase of their lives .

The immediate vicinity of the VinziDorf (Leonhardplatz 900, opposite the LKH University Hospital Graz ) in Graz was selected as a suitable location, providing long-term housing for alcoholic, homeless men. The parish of St. Leonhard provided a farm building on Riesstrasse for the construction. Construction began in autumn 2016. On April 5, 2017, the facility was opened under the name VinziDorf-Hospiz by the Styrian Governor Hermann Schützenhöfer and blessed by the Bishop of the Graz-Seckau Diocese, Wilhelm Krautwaschl . The first resident was admitted at the beginning of May.

financing

The construction was financed by Anton Paar GmbH as a major sponsor. The day-to-day operation is financed by donations from companies and private individuals. Kick-off funding from the Styrian Health Fund was granted for the first few years .

concept

The VinziDorf hospice comprises two hospice beds. Homeless people of legal age who need inpatient hospice care are taken in. The residents are looked after by 24-hour carers and visited by medical and nursing staff three times a week. Since no cure can be achieved in hospice patients, the highest possible quality of life is the therapy goal. The staff is supported by volunteers from the Styrian Hospice Association and volunteer doctors.

Awards

On October 11, 2017, the Elisabethinen for the VinziDorf-Hospiz were awarded the special golden prize by the jury of the KlinikAwards.
