Viola Shafik

Viola Shafik (born June 24, 1961 in Schönaich ) is a German-Egyptian film theorist, curator and filmmaker.

Life

Shafik was born to an Egyptian father and a German mother. She studied oriental studies , fine arts and film studies in Stuttgart. In 1994 she received her doctorate as Dr. phil. with Arab Cinema: History and Cultural Identity . In 1996 she lived in New York on a grant from the Rockefeller Humanities Foundation. Shafik taught at the American University in Cairo and the University of Zurich . Shafik worked as a translator for German television.

She is currently the director of studies for the MENA (Middle Eastern and North African) documentary film campus program, which focuses on the production of documentary films in the countries of the Middle East and North Africa.
