Woldemar Dietrich Freiherr von Budberg-Bönninghausen (born October 8, 1740 in Reval , † July 3, 1784 in Walk ) was a Baltic German painter and draftsman .

Life

Woldemar Dietrich was a member of the Barons von Budberg . His parents were the magistrate and lord of the Treyden Castle and Tirsen Castle in Livonia and the Estonian estates of Hark , Hukas and Strandhof , Otto Friedrich Freiherr von Budberg-Bönninghausen (1700–1755) and Barbara Wilhelmine, born von Zimmermann, widowed von Brevern (1716–1781).

Career

From 1754 to 1757 he received home tuition from the rector of the Riga Cathedral School, Johann Gotthelf Lindner. From 1757 he studied in Strasbourg . During his travels in Germany , Switzerland , Italy , France , England and the Netherlands , he trained as an artist with Adam Friedrich Oeser in Leipzig and Anton Raphael Mengs in Dresden . From 1765 he resided permanently in Livonia and lived one after the other on the parental estates Strasdenhof and Kegeln, which his mother had inherited. 1783 as district marshal in Walk and owned Tirsen Castle from 1784. He was also a magistrate , writer and poet . Budberg was buried in Rodenpois.

Works

Budberg painted oil paintings of landscapes and historical representations, for example the altarpiece for the church in Erlaa . He also made portraits and various drawings. Johann Christoph Brotze , for example, copied his painting of the Gravenheide mansion on Jägelsee near Riga for his collection.

family

He married Sophie Freiin von Campenhausen (1748–1805) in Riga in 1764 . The marriage resulted in nine children, four of whom died young. Among the children who reached adulthood are:

  1. Sophia Helena (1768–1841), ⚭ 1786 Gustav Johann von Buddenbrock (1758–1821), Land Marshal
  2. Otto Christoph (1771–1857), lawyer and writer
  3. Karl Woldemar (1778–1842), painter
