Johann Christoph Brotze (* 12. September 1742 in Görlitz ; † August 4 . Jul / 16th August  1823 greg. In Riga ) was a German educator and ethnographer .

Life

Johann Christoph Brotze graduated from high school in his hometown and then studied theology and philosophy at the universities of Leipzig and Wittenberg , where he was Amanuensis of Johann Matthias Schröckh and was awarded a Dr. phil. received his doctorate . He also trained as a draftsman. In 1768 he went to Riga and spent 46 years as a teacher and vice-principal at the Imperial Lyceum there , and from 1804 as a senior teacher at the Gouvernements-Gymnasium.

During this time he collected sources, records and news on the history of Riga, Livonia , Courland and Estonia . He has published more than 100 essays on the history of the Baltic Governments . His work is now a valuable source for historians.

The “Collection of Various Liefland Monuments” is a unique document. It includes detailed descriptions of more than 2,000 buildings, graves, coats of arms, etc., illustrated with drawings and pictures, which often no longer exist today.

  • Collection of various Liefland monuments, prospectuses and the like , 10 volumes, manuscript, 1776–1818. These folio volumes from the document collection of the Latvian Academic Library (Latvijas Akadēmiskās bibliotēkas documentu krājums) were published in five volumes after decades of planning under difficult economic conditions. The Estonian (fifth) part was created at the University of Dorpat ( Tartu ):
