Vipa is the name of a wine-containing carbonated drink from the GDR . It contains around 20 percent white wine , mineral water and sugar, natural essences of eight herbs, such as violet root , and tea extract. The alcohol content is 1.8 percent. It was dispensed in bottle sizes of 0.5 and 0.275 liters.

history

A Berlin pharmacist invented the mixed drink mentioned in 1959. In the early 1960s, the recipe was recognized as a patent by VEB Weinverarbeitung . In Frankfurt (Oder) the Wigra - Wilhelm Graßmann KG, Spirituosenfabrik, founded in 1947, took over part of the production. After its nationalization, production continued in Frankfurt, which had now become part of the VEB Bärensiegel Berlin . In the 1960s and 1970s, up to 35 million bottles were sold annually.

Another producer of Vipa was the Prenzlauer Berg Schultheiß brewery in Berlin. After the successful establishment of the market, a variant with red wine called Virola was put on sale.

With the liquidation of the Bärensiegel business in 1992, Vipa and Virola disappeared from the offer. The Vipa has been available again since 1995, but less sweet. In 2003 around 3.5 million bottles were sold. The manufacturer is now Hanse Sektkellerei Wismar GmbH , and bottles between 200 ml and 0.75 l are filled.
