Virginia is an Adventure - Computer game which was produced by British-Irish development studio variable State.

action

Virginia is set in the US state of the same name and tells the story of the young FBI agent Anne Tarver, who, together with her experienced partner Maria Halperin, tries to track down a boy who has disappeared in the fictional town of Kingdom.

Game principle and technology

Virginia is a 1st person adventure. The presentation of the event is from the perspective of the player. With the help of the input device (mouse or controller depending on the platform) the player can look around in all directions and move through the game world with the help of the WASD buttons or the controller. In the middle of the screen there is a fixed cursor which, when positioned over a manipulable object, indicates its manipulability and enables interaction with this object. Since the number of manipulable objects in the game world is very small compared to classic adventure games and interactions only allow the paused action to continue, the game is marketed as an interactive film and is referred to as this in the press. Numerous temporal and spatial leaps result in an unusual narrative structure. A special feature of the game is the lack of dialogues.

Metacritic 74

Virginia received mostly positive reviews. The Metacritic review database aggregates 36 reviews to an average of 74. The innovative narrative style of the plot and the music were praised in the press.

“It is the game that titles like Dear Esther , Gone Home and Firewatch have hinted at, but in a way that evolves the interactive narrative form way beyond anything we've seen before. It's a game to savor and talk about for years to come, one that left me, just like the inhabitants of Kingdom, Virginia, speechless. "
