history

Abraham Smith Bowman got rich as a dealer in automobiles which he sold in Indiana . In 1927 he bought 7,000 acres of land in Virginia to farm.

Abraham Smith Bowman founded the distillery in 1935, two years after Prohibition ended, on Sunset Hills Farm, the Bowmans family estate in Fairfax County , Virginia. The Bowmans grew the raw materials for whiskey on their own farm, and within a few years their own small village with 50 buildings developed on Sunsets Hills. The most important market was the nearby Washington, DC Between 1954 and 1968 the distillery operated its own train station with an attached post office, the Sunset Hills Station.

In 1988 the producer relocated to Fredericksburg on the site of a former cellophane factory in order to avoid the high settlement pressure in the booming north of Virginia.

The distillery remained in family ownership until 2003, when it was sold to the Sazerac Company, which also owns the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky, among others .

Since 1988, the first fire in Kentucky has taken place at Buffalo Trace's premises, while the second, slower fire in Kuofer blisters is being carried out on site in Virginia. The whiskey is also aged in Virginia.

Smith Bowman also produces rum , gin and tequila .
