Virtua Racing is an arcade racing game from 1992 developed by Sega-AM2 . It was one of the first racing games to rely exclusively on polygon graphics for display.
The player has the choice between three different vehicles and three routes, which are divided according to difficulty. The game can be played either alone or in pairs.
In 1993 the successor Virtua Formula appeared . The number of possible players was increased from two to eight.
Implementation for game consoles
The first implementation for a game console took place in 1994 for the Sega Mega Drive , but with only one vehicle. Since the hardware of the Mega Drive alone would not have been sufficient for the polygonal graphics, the module with the SVP has a coprocessor. A few months later, with the launch of the 32X under the name Virtua Racing Deluxe, an expanded version with improved graphics, two additional tracks and three vehicles appeared.
Due to the SVP chip in the module and the associated high production costs, the game was offered for 249 DM ( RRP ) when it was released . This made Virtua Racing the most expensive module and even exceeded the price of the Mega Drive at the time, which was offered at a reduced price by some dealers. The selling price was reduced to 199 DM soon after publication.
In 1996 the game was ported for the Sega Saturn . However, many players complained about the poor controls.
For the PlayStation 2 , the game was re-released as part of the Sega Classics Collection .
