Virtual specialist library for political science

The Virtual Specialized Library for Political Science ( ViFaPol ) was a virtual specialist library that made available specialist information from the field of political science and peace research in an Internet portal for online research from 2000–2015 . ViFaPol was operated by the Hamburg State and University Library , which as a special library for political science and peace research had more than 1000 print and online specialist journals as well as 50 specialist databases in its portfolio.

In order to facilitate access to this literature significantly, the SUB Hamburg, with the support of the German Research Foundation, set up the Virtual Specialized Library for Political Science since mid-2000. The aim of the project was to develop a central entry point into the specialist research for information objects of all kinds. This included Internet sources, magazines and articles, databases, monographs and, last but not least, gray literature .

The metasearch was at the heart of the research portal for political science . More than 20 databases could be searched with one search query . In the hit display, the users were shown different ways of getting from their workplace to the document. The ViFaPol specialist information guide, which contained around 4,000 internet sources, magazines and databases, was an ideal introduction to the search for technically relevant internet sources.

The core services of ViFaPol were supplemented by other offers, such as B. a specialist tutorial, a repository eDoc.ViFaPol: the open access full-text server for political and administrative sciences or a weblog.

ViFaPol has been revised twice, the first relaunch was in 2006, the second, which expanded the specialist portal to include administrative sciences, at the beginning of 2014.

As part of the conversion of the SSG funding program of the German Research Foundation to specialized information services for science, the special collection areas of politics and peace research as well as administrative sciences were discontinued. The books and journals that have been accessed via metasearch can still be researched using the catalog of the Hamburg State and University Library, the subject indices can be found on the subject information page on political science and peace research in the same library and the repository can be found at the old web address, but is no longer supplemented.
