Baron Bourchier
Baron Bourchier is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England . The title has been suspended since 1646.
Awarding and Abeyance
The title was created in 1342 for Sir Robert Bourchier , who was Lord Chancellor from 1340 to 1341 . The title was created as Barony by writ and is also hereditary in the female line. Since several heiresses with equal rights existed after the death of the 10th baron, the title has been suspended since then (so-called Abeyance ). In principle, the Abeyance only ends when there is only one authorized heir or a descendant of the same.
The following descendants of the daughters of the 9th Baron are currently entitled to the dormant title:
- Teresa Freeman-Grenville, 13th Lady Kinloss (* 1957)
- Michael Brudenell-Bruce, 8th Marquess of Ailesbury (* 1926)
- Robert Shirley, 14th Earl Ferrers (* 1952)
Other titles
The 5th Baron was raised to Viscount Bourchier in 1446 and Earl of Essex in 1461 . Both titles were hereditary only in the male line and expired on the death of the 6th Baron. For the 8th Baron, the title Earl of Essex was created again in 1572 . This expired on the death of the 10th Baron in 1646. All the titles mentioned also belonged to the Peerage of England.
