Earl Annesley is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

Awards and subordinate titles

The title was awarded to Francis Annesley, 2nd Viscount Glerawly , on August 17, 1789 . The award was made with the special addition that in the absence of his own legitimate male descendants, the title could also be passed on to his younger brother Richard Annesley and his legitimate male descendants.

He had inherited the titles Viscount Glerawly , in the County of Fermanagh , and Baron Annesley , of Castlewellan in the County of Down , from his father William Annesley in 1770 , which he received on November 14, 1766 and September 20, 1758 in the Peerage of Ireland. Both titles have since been subordinate titles to the respective earl.

Since the 1st Earl had several illegitimate but no legitimate children, his brother inherited him as 2nd Earl on his death in 1686 according to the special addition.

Today's holder of the title is Michael Annesley as 12th Earl.
