Earl of Carlisle

Earl of Carlisle is a hereditary British title of nobility created three times in the Peerage of England .

Awards and subordinate titles

The title was first bestowed on March 25, 1322 for Andrew Harclay, 1st Baron Harclay . On May 15, 1321 he had already been called to parliament and was thus raised to Baron Harclay (also Hartcla ). In 1322 he was executed for high treason and his titles were revoked.

In the second bestowal the title was bestowed on September 13, 1622, James Hay, 1st Viscount Doncaster . He was a favorite of King James I and was on June 21, 1606 in the Peerage of Scotland to Lord Hay and in the Peerage of England on June 20, 1615 to Baron Hay , of Sawley in the County of York and on July 5 1618 was raised to Viscount Doncaster . He belonged to a branch line of Clan Hay . His son, the 2nd Earl, inherited the title Baron Denny , created in 1604 as Barony by writ in the Peerage of England, from his maternal grandfather, Charles Goring, 2nd Earl of Norwich , in 1637 . The 2nd Earl died childless in 1660 and all his titles became void.

The third bestowal of the title was created for Sir Charles Howard on April 20, 1661 , along with the subordinate titles Viscount Howard of Morpeth , in the County of Cumberland , and Baron Dacre of Gillesland , in the County of Cumberland. He belonged to the Howard family and was a great-great-grandson of the 4th Duke of Norfolk . The 12th Earl inherited from his mother in 1982 the title 12th Lord Ruthven of Freeland, created in the Peerage of Scotland in January 1651 .

Ancestral seat of the Earl of Carlisle's third award was Castle Howard and is now Naworth Castle .

The alleged title heir ( Heir Presumptive ) is the brother of the current title holder Philip Charles Wentworth Howard (* 1963).
