Viscount Montgomery

Viscount Montgomery was a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded once each in the Peerage of Ireland and the Peerage of England .

Awards

For the first time on May 3, 1622 in the Peerage of Ireland the title Viscount Montgomery , of the Great Ardes, the Scottish soldier and aristocrat Hugh Montgomery was bestowed. This had made a contribution to the settlement of Scots in the Irish province of Ulster , the so-called Ulster Scots . His grandson, the 3rd Viscount, was elevated to Earl of Mount Alexander on July 18, 1661 in the Peerage of Ireland . Both titles expired when his descendant, the 5th Earl, died on April 7, 1757.

In the second award on March 24, 1687 in the Peerage of England, the title Viscount Montgomery was newly created for William Herbert, 1st Earl of Powis . The Viscount title was awarded to him as a subordinate title to the title of Marquess of Powis . Already on April 4, 1674 he had been raised to Earl of Powis and in 1667 inherited the title Baron Powis, which his grandfather had been given to his grandfather on April 2, 1629, from his father . The titles expired on March 8, 1748 when the 3rd Marquess died.
