Viscount Samuel
Viscount Samuel , of Mount Carmel and Toxteth in the City of Liverpool , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
Award
The title was created in 1937 for the politician Herbert Louis Samuel . He was the first Jew to become cabinet minister. From 1920 to 1925 he was High Commissioner of the British League of Nations Mandate for Palestine . In the following years he became chairman of the Liberal Party . He was the nephew of Samuel Montagu, 1st Baron Swaythling .
