David Herbert Samuel, 3rd Viscount Samuel OBE (born July 22, 1922 in Jerusalem , then a League of Nations mandate for Palestine , † October 7, 2014 in Tel Aviv-Jaffa ) was a British - Israeli chemist , neurobiologist and peer .

Life

David Herbert Samuel, 3rd Viscount Samuel was born to Edwin Herbert Samuel (1898–1978) and his wife Hadassah Goor († 1986). In 1942 he volunteered for military service and joined the Royal Artillery Corps . He was stationed in India , Burma and Sumatra . He was promoted to Captain ( Captain transported) and was for his bravery mentioned in dispatches . After the end of the war he returned to Great Britain and prepared for his final exam. He completed the exam preparation together with another chemistry student, the future British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher . He graduated from Oxford University in 1948 with a Master of Arts (MA; Oxford Master of Arts). In 1948 he returned to Israel. In 1953 he earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

A scientific career as a natural scientist followed . He was a research fellow ( Research Fellow ) at Harvard University (1957-1958) and at the University of California at Berkeley (1965-1966). Since 1957 he has taught at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rechovot . He was one of the founding fathers of the chemistry faculty of the Weizmann Institute of Science. He was a member of the US-Israeli Educational Foundation Board; from 1974 to 1975 he was chairman there. He was chairman of the chemistry board of Feinberg Graduate School , member of the board of the Israel Science Teaching Center and chairman of Weizmann Science Press. From 1967 he was visiting professor at the School of Molecular Studies at the University of Warwick and from 1969 visiting professor at the Royal Society . He was "Sherman Professor of Physical Chemistry" at the Hebrew University (1968-1987). In 1971 he was there "Sherman Professor" and Dean of the Chemistry Faculty ( Dean Chemistry Faculty ). After his retirement he was President of the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design; he held this office for 7 years. He was also Director ( Director ) of the Center for Neurosciences and Behavioral Research (1970-1985).

In the course of his academic activity, his scientific focus changed from physical chemistry , especially kinetics , to neurobiology . Samuel's publication list includes over 300 publications. He also wrote the book Memory: How We Use It, Lose It and Can Improve It .

With the death of his father on November 14, 1978 he inherited the title of Viscount Samuel , Viscount Samuel of Mount Carmel and Toxteth in the City of Liverpool . In 1996 he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire .

Membership in the House of Lords

With the inheritance of the title of Viscount Samuel, Samuel became an official member of the House of Lords on November 14, 1978 . He took his official oath on October 16, 1995. From November 14, 1978 to November 11, 1999, he was a formal member of the House of Lords. He was the only Israeli who was ever a member of the House of Lords. His membership in the House of Lords ended on November 11, 1999 by the House of Lords Act 1999 .

Personal and family

Samuel was married a total of five times. On May 5, 1950, David Herbert Samuel, 3rd Viscount Samuel married his first wife Esther Berelowitz, the daughter of Jacob Berelowitz. The marriage ended in divorce in 1957. His daughter Judith (* 1951) emerged from his first marriage. From 1960 to 1979 he was married to Rinna Dafni, the daughter of Meir Grossman, from Herzliyah . From this marriage comes his second daughter, Naomi Rachel (* 1962). In June 1980 he married Veronika Grimm, the daughter of Ernest Engelhardt, from Toronto , Canada ; the marriage was divorced in 1993. His fourth marriage was on July 8, 1997, Eve Black, daughter of David Black, San Francisco , California . His fifth and last wife, Ruti, survived him.

He lived in the Carmel Mountains (Mount Carmel) for many years . In 2003 he lived on Pinhas Rosen Street in Herzliya , Israel.

Samuel died in Tel-Aviv-Jaffa in October 2014 at the age of 92. He was buried in Rehovot Cemetery. Title heir was his younger brother Dan Judah Samuel (1925-2014). However, he died in November 2014 and was only awarded the title “Viscount Samuel” for one month. He was followed by his son Jonathan Herbert Samuel (* 1965) as 5th Viscount Samuel.
