Samuel Montagu, 1st Baron Swaythling
Samuel Montagu, 1st Baron Swaythling (actually Montagu Samuel-Montagu, 1st Baron Swaythling , born December 21, 1832 in Liverpool , † January 12, 1911 ) was a British banker and politician.
Life
He was born in Liverpool in 1832 as Moses Samuel and was the second son of the watchmaker Louis Samuel (1794-1859) and his wife Henrietta Israel († 1860). He later changed his first name to Montagu and in 1894 he added a Royal License to his family name to Samuel Montagu .
He founded the Samuel Montagu & Co. bank in London in 1853 and made a fortune. From 1885 to 1900 he was a member of the House of Commons for the Whitechapel constituency in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets . He belonged to the Liberal Party .
As an Orthodox Jew, he was one of the leaders of British Jews in his day. He cared heavily about the religious and social situation of Jewish immigrants in the United Kingdom, particularly in his constituency. Montagu promoted the Chowewe Zion , among other things by petitioning Sultan Abdülhamid II in 1893 to allow Jewish settlements in Transjordan (together with Simeon Singer). He remained reserved about Theodor Herzl's efforts and did not allow himself to be won over to Zionism .
In 1894 he was ennobled as Baronet , of South Stoneham House in the County of Hants and of Kensington Palace Gardens in the County of London . 1907 followed the elevation to the peer as Baron Swaythling , of Swaythling in the County of Southampton , whereby he became a member of the House of Lords .
Montague had married Ellen Cohen (1843-1919) in 1862 and had six daughters and four sons with her. He died in 1911. His titles passed to his eldest son Louis . The liberal politician Herbert Samuel, 1st Viscount Samuel , was his nephew.
