Viscount (of) Teviot was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .
Awards
The title was first on 20 October 1685 by King James VII. For the British lower house deputies Hon. Robert Spencer created. He was a son of William Spencer , 2nd Baron Spencer of Wormleighton and younger brother of Henry Spencer , 1st Earl of Sunderland . The title expired with the suicide of the childless 1st Viscount on May 20, 1694.
In the second award, the title was newly created on December 4, 1696 by King William II for his General Sir Thomas Livingstone, 2nd Baronet . Together with the Viscount title he was awarded the subordinate title of Lord Livingstone of Peebles . In 1673 he had inherited the title of Baronet , of Newbigging in the County of Lanark , from his father , which he had received on June 29, 1627 in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia . In 1697 his local rival William Douglas , a younger son of William Douglas, 1st Marquess of Queensberry , was to be promoted to Earl of March and Viscount of Peebles . Livingstone objected because the two titles related to the city of Peebles overlapped. His rival was able to prevail, however, whereupon Livingsstones title of Lord Livingstone of Peebles on March 30, 1697 with retroactive precedent to December 4, 1696 in Lord Livingstone of Hyndford was renamed. His peer status expired with the childless death of the 1st Viscount on January 17, 1711. His baronet title fell to his younger brother Alexander.
