The Vitnesteinen (Norwegian for witness stone ) is a large rocky outcrop in Queen Maud Land, East Antarctica . In the Wohlthatmassiv it rises on the west side of the eastern Petermann chain .
The formation was discovered and mapped using aerial photographs during the German Antarctic Expedition in 1938/39 under the direction of polar explorer Alfred Ritscher . Norwegian cartographers, who also named it, mapped the rock using aerial photographs of the Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1960).
