Vitsœ is a manufacturer of designer furniture, best known for the production of system furniture by Dieter Rams . The furniture produced by the company are considered classics of modern German design and prestige objects. The company was founded in Frankfurt am Main and is now based in Leamington Spa.

history

The company Vitsœ & Zapf was founded in 1959 in Frankfurt am Main by the Danish furniture dealer Niels Wiese Vitsœ and the physicist and heir of a carpenter's business Otto Zapf to produce the furniture designs of the designer Dieter Rams. Rams designed numerous modular furniture for Vitsœ, including the 606 shelving system and the 620 armchair program, both of which are considered design classics. In 1970 Otto Zapf left the company, which has been called Vitsœ since then .

In 1985, Mark Adams founded the English subsidiary Vitsœ Ltd, initially to sell furniture in Great Britain. After Niels Vitsœ's retirement, Adams became managing director. In 1995, following the insolvency of the German parent company Wiese-Vitsoe, the company headquarters and parts of production were relocated to Great Britain. The furniture was produced for the German-speaking area from 1995 to 2012 by the German furniture manufacturer Sdr + . Vitsœ has held an exclusive worldwide license for Dieter Rams' furniture designs since 2012.

In 2017, Vitsœ moved from its London workshop to a new headquarters in Royal Leamington Spa in central England.

The 606 shelving system was designed by Dieter Rams in 1960 and has been manufactured by Vitsœ without interruption ever since. The flexible attachment of the components allows easy assembly and conversion and simplifies the move. The system has received multiple awards and is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City .

The 620 armchair was also designed by Dieter Rams in 1962 . The architecture critic and publicist Hans Wichmann described the 620 armchair as an icon of furniture design. The armchair has won several design awards. The armchair was awarded the Rosenthal Studio Prize in 1966 and was awarded the gold medal at the international furniture exhibition in Vienna in 1969. The armchair has been part of the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum since 1970.

The 621 table was also designed by Dieter Rams in 1962 to complement his 620 armchair program. In 2014, the product was further developed in close cooperation with Dieter Rams.
