Vivar del Cid is a village with about 235 inhabitants in the municipality ( municipio ) Quintanilla Vivar in the province of Burgos in the autonomous community of Castile and Leon in northern Spain . The place is considered the birthplace of the Spanish national hero Don Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, better known under the name El Cid .

Vivar del Cid is located in the Castilian plateau ( meseta ) approx. 10 km north of the city of Burgos at an altitude of approx. 850  m .

economy

The place traditionally lived from agriculture. Several families from Burgos have now settled here. In the meantime, tourism also plays a not insignificant role for the municipality's income.

history

The place name is first mentioned in a marriage certificate that Rodrigo de Vivar and his wife Jimena had made on the occasion of their marriage in 1074; Don Rodrigo probably owned property here. In the heroic song Cantar de Mio Cid (around 1200) Vivar is mentioned as the birthplace of Rodrigo.

  • In the Monasterio de Nuestra Señora del Espino , various documents and writings related to the history of the Cid are shown - including a facsimile copy of the manuscript of the Cantar de Mio Cid .
  • Two modern monuments in the town center are also reminiscent of the Campeador (= "Kämpe").
  • The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel is dedicated to the Archangel Michael ; it has medieval origins, but the current building dates from the 16th century. Inside there is a Romanesque font and two baroque carved altars.
