Vla is a typical dessert from the Netherlands . It is a pudding with a particularly liquid consistency. It is available ready-made in disposable packaging such as beverage cartons or plastic cups and also in reusable bottles.

Composition and preparation

According to the Dutch Food Act, starch must be a characteristic component and the composition must consist of at least 50% cow's milk . The milk fat content must be at least 2.6%.

Traditionally, Vla is made from boiled milk with custard , or from eggs, corn starch and vanilla . Both variants are sugared.

Flavors

Vla is available in a wide variety of flavors. In addition to traditional puddings such as chocolate , vanilla , cream , strawberry and caramel , fruit flavors such as lemon , grape or apple-cinnamon are increasingly entering the market. In addition, the so-called Dubbelvla is offered, in which two different types (mostly chocolate-vanilla, strawberry-vanilla or vanilla-caramel) are filled together in one package, which can form streaky patterns when poured . Another variant are vlas with chocolate balls , so-called bolletjes . On special national events, there are orange Oranjevla with orange flavor . Pure Vla without a special flavor is called Blanke Vla or Vla naturel . For some time now there has also been triple vla in the Netherlands, mostly chocolate-vanilla with strawberry sauce and strawberry-vanilla with caramel sauce. Slagroomvla (Sahnevla), which is thicker than normal Vla , is now available in different flavors .

Combinations

Before eating, something is often added to the Vla, for example bitterkoekjes (similar to the Italian amaretti ), applesauce, bananas and / or Hagelslag (streusel). A common combination is yellow (vanilla) vla with currants . The so-called Vlaflip is a completely independent dish . Originally, there are three ingredients that are poured into a tall glass one after the other: red fruit syrup, yoghurt and vanilla vla. There are now numerous variations of it. Vla is traditionally consumed with a spoon, but can also be drunk straight from the pack.

Trademark law

For Germany, Levola Hengelo BV was able to register the actually generic term Vla as a trademark in 2004.
