Vladan Desnica

Vladan Desnica (born September 17, 1905 in Zadar , † March 4, 1967 in Zagreb ) was a Yugoslav writer who was one of the most important authors of Yugoslavia after the Second World War .

Life

Vladan Desnica was the son of the Serbian politician Uroš Desnica . He attended high schools in Zadar, Split and Šibenik , and then studied philosophy and law in Zagreb and Paris. After completing his legal studies in 1930, he initially worked as a lawyer. In the early 1930s Desnica published her first literary works and founded the magazine Magazin sjeverne Dalmacije . At that time he was working for the Public Prosecutor's Office in Split. After the Second World War, Desnica was head of the legal department in the Croatian Ministry of Finance from 1945 to 1949 , but then devoted himself exclusively to his writing activities.

Works

Desnica wrote mainly prose works, two novels and a number of short stories in the 1950s. In addition, he also came out with a collection of poems. He is one of the most important Croatian authors after the war. Thematically, his stories are mostly set among the common people of Dalmatia and its hinterland. Desnica's profession as a lawyer and judge is also present in his literary work, which repeatedly deals with questions of justice, prejudice and the background and circumstances of deeds. Desnica has a humanistic, balancing nature. He also worked as a translator from Italian and French and wrote essays on literary history.
