Wladimir Georgijewitsch Urin ( Russian Владимир Георгиевич Урин , scientific transliteration Vladimir Georgievič Urin ; born March 19, 1947 in Kirow ) is a Russian opera director and director. He has been awarded the honorary title “ People's Artist of Russia ” and is director of the Moscow Bolshoi Theater .

Career

Urin began his theater career in 1973. In 1981 he moved to Moscow, where he was responsible for the youth and puppet theater department in the Russian Theater Association. Four years later he graduated from the Russian Academy of Theater Arts and was secretary of the Russian Theater Association from 1987 to 1996, where he also served as deputy president.

In 1994 he initiated the Golden Mask Award as a national theater award. In 1995 he became director of the Stanislavsky and Nemirowitsch Danchenko Music Theater (1995–2013). Two years later he received the same position at the International Festival of Contemporary Dance. In 2013, after the scandals in the Bolshoi Theater and the attack on the artistic director Sergei Filin, he was appointed General Director of the Bolshoi Theater, replacing Anatoly Iksanov there .

On July 8, 2017, three days before the planned premiere, Urin canceled the premiere of a ballet about the legendary dancer Rudolf Nureyev , created by Kirill Serebrennikow together with the choreographer Yuri Possochow , which also addressed his private life. Urin claimed the dismissal was due to the poor quality of the choreography and dance. It was the first time production had been withdrawn since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and rumors of political censorship were rife.
