The Bird Island is an island in Lake Biel in the Swiss canton of Bern .
geography
When the sea level is low, the island is a maximum of around 700 m² and is located at the confluence of the Schüss with Lake Biel at an altitude of 429 m above sea level. M. At higher water level in the lake is partially or (rarely) quite flooded.
description
The island is uninhabited and has low bushes. Numerous water-loving breeding birds z. B. gray geese , mallards and seagulls have found a refuge there, which is where the name of the island comes from.
The island was originally of natural origin in the delta of the Schüss and was located a little further to the east. In 1999, in the course of fortification work on the beach floor , it was removed from its place of origin, relocated to the sea and refilled there. In 2017, the city of Biel dismantled debris - gravel at the access to the island in order to prevent the Schüss from backflowing during flood events. In addition, after the work was completed, the land bridge was removed to make it more difficult for dogs to access the island. This enlarged the island towards the lake. The fairway is also kept free for small vehicles , which occasionally circle the island as a regatta destination.
