The Voggenberg (approx. 600 m) is after the Hochgitzen (676 m) the highest point in the municipality of Bergheim in the state of Salzburg . It is one of the foothills of the Salzkammergut Mountains at the transition to the Alpine foothills .
The largely forested mountain lies west of the district of Bergheim of the same name above the Salzach Valley on the border with Bavaria . To the northeast are two small lakes, the Ragginger and Luginger See .
On the Voggenberg, which was already settled by the Celts, there was also a cult site . It is believed that people followed the cult of light there and also made observations of the sky . For the grammar school teacher Hans Eisner and local star friends, this was a reason, in addition to the favorable location, to build the Voggenberg observatory on the eastern slope from 1986 to 1988 . The observatory, which is now part of the Salzburg House of Nature , was replaced in 2018/19 by the Vega Observatory on Haunsberg .
