Ο ποταμός Βοϊδομάτης

The Voidomatis ( Greek Βοϊδομάτης ( m. Sg. )) Or River of Vikos ( ποτάμι του Βίκου ) is a river in the Greek region of Epirus . It flows through the Vikos Gorge before it joins the Aoos .

geography

course

The course can be roughly divided into three sections:

  • The upper course with an area with richly branched source streams up to the entrance to the Vikos Gorge
  • the middle course in the Vikos Gorge, and the lower course, where strong springs flow again, to about Vikos and
  • the lower reaches where it joins the Aoos. In Greek maps the river is still referred to as Voidomatis.

The river itself is only 15 km long.

Upper course

Its source rivers arise in a roughly triangular area. The northern edge of this triangle is formed by the Tymfi Mountains. From the eastern edge of the Tymfi to the south, the Voidomatis shares its headwaters with the Aoos, which circumnavigates the Tymfi Mountains further north. The edge of the triangle extends south to about Kavallari (Καβαλλάρι), where the Dipotamos (Διπόταμος) shares its headwaters with the Voidomatis. From Kavallari the western edge runs along the narrow ridge of the Mitsikeli (Μιτσικέλι Όρος) to the north. The Mitsikeli forms a clear watershed to the Stravia (Στραβιά ρεύμα) and the Pamvotida lake .

Headwaters are nameless among many: Vikos Revma (Βίκος ρεύμα) Lakkos Pavis (Λάκκος Πάβις), Matia Revma (Ματιά ρεύμα) Koussoumi Revma (Κουσσούμι ρεύμα), Zai Revma (Ζάη ρεύμα) Lithostroto Revma (Λιθόστρωτο ρεύμα) Dovris Revma (Ντόβρις ρεύμα), Myrisi Revma (Μυρίση ρεύμα) and Xiropotamos (Ξηροπόταμος). In the vicinity of the villages Vitsa (Βίτσα, west) and Koukkouli (Κουκούλι, east) the river takes the name "Voidomatis". It flows north with a few curves. This is where the Vikos gorge begins with the foothills of the Tymfi massif. In this area it takes on more streams and rivers: from the right: Mezaria revma (Μεζαριά ρεύμα), Lakkos Kriaras (Λάκκος Κριάρας), the probably longest tributary Megas Lakkos (Μέγας Λάκκος, approx. 8 km) and many more unnamed.

Lower course

The lower course of the river begins around Vikos (Βίκος). The strong source, which is called the "Voidomatis source" (Πηγές Βοϊδομάτη), rises near Vikos. after a few meters the Lakkos Amarouda (Λάκκος Αμαρούδα) and the Zavojanni Revma (Ζαβογιάννη ρεύμα) flow to it. Here it winds in many curves through the Voidomatis Gorge (Φαράγγι Βοϊδομάτη) and flows 90 ° to the west. A few kilometers further, the Koudounata Revma (Κουδουνάτα ρεύμα) and other small streams flow to it from the left and west. Reaches the village of Agios Minas (Άγιος Μηνάς), from where it turns more strongly to the north. He turns around the witness mountain Kastritsa (Καστρίτσα) and reaches Kalyvia (Καλύβια) flat terrain. From there it flows further north, in some places its river bed divides. After about 4 km it joins the Aoos in the Tyrochalia (Τυροχάλια) / Sourdies (Σουρδιές) area.

Nature & Tourism

The Voidomatis is one of the cleanest rivers in Europe and flows through one of the most charming natural landscapes in Greece, the Vikos-Aoos National Park . Characteristic Epirotic stone bridges span the river in several places. The most famous are the bridge of Klidonias (ή Κλειδωνιάβιστας, ) and the bridge that is named after its builder Alexis Misios ( ). Several monasteries stand on the slopes of the river, such as the Monastery of Panagia Spiliotissas (Μονή Παναγίας Σπηλιώτισσας, ) and the monastery Agias Paraskevis (Μονή Άγιας Παρασκευής, ) from the year 1414. It is possible, on the Voidomatis kayak to drive and go rafting .
