Paiute petroglyphs in the Tablelands

The Volcanic Tablelands are a landscape of the upper Owens Valley in the east of the US state California , near Bishop . It was formed by erosion from volcanic ash , which was ejected by eruptions of the adjacent Long Valley Caldera to the northwest .

The region is characterized by gentle peaks in which boulders made of more compacted rock lie. Due to the climatic conditions and the very water-permeable soil, only thin vegetation prevails in the semi-desert.

In prehistoric and historical times, groups of southern Paiute Indians settled in the Volcanic Tablelands . They left petroglyphs , incised drawings of a ritual nature on many rock faces .

Almost all of the area is owned by the US federal government and administered by the Bureau of Land Management . This maintains a small visitor contact point on the access road , which provides information about recreational uses in the tablelands. In addition to hiking and mountain biking , climbing and bouldering on the field blocks are in the foreground. Established sand slopes can also be used with quads .
