Volker Busskamp (born December 25, 1980 in Bocholt ) is a German biologist (biotechnology, neurosciences, stem cell research ).

Life

Volker Busskamp studied biotechnology at the TU Braunschweig from 2001 with a diploma in 2006 and received his diploma (DEA) in biology from the University of Geneva in 2007 . In 2010 he received his doctorate from the University of Basel and the Friedrich Miescher Institute under Botond Roska . He was a post-doctoral student at Harvard Medical School with George M. Church from 2011 to 2014 . Since 2014 he has been head of a research group at the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRT).

research

Busskamp is known for studying neural circuits in vitro, where he extracts the different types of nerve cells from induced pluripotent stem cells .

With the help of gene therapy in mice , he has also partially cured retinitis pigmentosa , a form of congenital blindness. To do this, they used adeno-associated viruses to build halorhodopsin (a light-driven chloride pump from halobacteria similar to rhodopsin ) into the uvula. He also identified two microRNAs that are necessary for the functionality of the photoreceptors and also form approaches for therapies. He holds several patents.

In 2017 he received the Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Young Talent Award . In 2015 he received an ERC Starting Grant. In 2011 he received the Retina pigmentosa research award.
