Volker Gruhn (* 1963 ) is a German computer scientist and professor for practical computer science , especially software engineering, at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Duisburg-Essen . He is also chairman of the supervisory board of adesso SE in Dortmund.

Gruhn studied computer science at the University of Dortmund from 1982 to 1987 and received his doctorate there in 1991. He then worked for the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and System Technology ISST . From 1994 he was a member of the management of a software house of VEBA AG for three years .

In 1997 Gruhn took over a professorship for practical computer science in the computer science department at the University of Dortmund. There he researched the development of e-business applications and component-based software architectures. From 2002 to 2010 Gruhn held the chair for Applied Telematics / e-Business at the University of Leipzig . His research focus here was the development of mobile, distributed software systems.

Since the summer semester 2010, Gruhn has held the chair for software engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen, research focus: mobile applications.

In 1997 Gruhn was one of the founders of adesso SE . Today he is chairman of the company's supervisory board. He is also a member of the supervisory board of the adesso subsidiary e-Spirit AG, Dortmund, and chairman of the supervisory board of AISportsWatch GmbH, Essen.

Volker Gruhn lives in Dortmund.

Volker Gruhn has been a member of the Digitization Advisory Board of DAK-Gesundheit, Hamburg, since 2017, a member of the University Council of Leipzig University since 2019 and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and System Technology since 2020.

He is co-founder of Softwareforen Leipzig GmbH (2008), Gesundheitsforen Leipzig GmbH (2009), both Leipzig, CampusLab GmbH (2012), Interaction Room GmbH (2014), TamedAI GmbH (2020), all Essen, as well as it factum GmbH (2007), Munich.
