Volker Manow

Volker Manow (* 1961 ) is a German politician . From 2009 to 2016 he was the independent mayor of the city of Geesthacht .

Life

Manow received his Abitur in Hamburg and did his military service in the Navy. This was followed by studying law in Hamburg and then working in the armed forces administration. In 1992 he moved to the Lüneburg district government.

Manow, who holds a doctorate in administrative law, became First City Councilor in Geesthacht in 1999 and, after the death of the former mayor Ingo Fokken, initially took over the official business before he was elected mayor in December 2009 with the support of all parliamentary groups. Criticism was caused by the fact that only one other candidate stood for election, the likewise non-party bus driver and author Konstantin Winkler. The turnout was particularly low at just 30.3%.

Although his electoral term is 6 years, he applied for the office of district administrator in the Steinburg district in January 2013 , which would have required the mayor's office to give up. However, the candidacy was unsuccessful. Manow did not run for mayoral election in December 2015. Olaf Schulze (SPD) was elected as his successor .
