Volker Rudolph (* 1976 in Amberg ) is a German cardiologist and university professor. He is director of the Clinic for General and Interventional Cardiology / Angiology at the Heart and Diabetes Center NRW, Bad Oeynhausen ( University Clinic of the Ruhr University Bochum ).

Life

Rudolph studied human medicine at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena from 1996 to 2003 . After completing his doctorate at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, he worked for nine years in the cardiological clinic of the University Clinic Hamburg-Eppendorf . Here he completed his training as a specialist in internal medicine and cardiology and worked for the last two years as a senior physician before moving to the cardiology clinic at the University Clinic in Cologne , where he was deputy clinic director and senior physician from 2014 to August 2018.

Rudolph's clinical work focuses on the treatment of heart valve diseases with a focus on the mitral and tricuspid valves as well as the catheter-supported therapy of coronary heart disease . Rudolph is the deputy spokesman for the working group for catheter-supported mitral valve therapy of the German Society for Cardiology .

From a scientific point of view, Rudolph's working group is concerned with the development of new approaches for treating cardiac insufficiency. A two-year research stay at the Institute for Pharmacology and Chemical Biology at the University of Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania, funded by the German Heart Foundation (2007–2009) formed the starting point for his research project. Here, the description of signal molecules formed in the human body succeeded, the function of which the working group has been able to clarify further over the past few years and whose possible use as a drug is currently being tested in early clinical studies. When he started working at the Heart and Diabetes Center NRW (HDZ NRW), Bad Oeynhausen, his research projects were continued at the "Agnes Wittenborg Institute for Cardiovascular Research", which will be located there. The support association of the HDZ NRW provided funds of one million euros for the establishment of the research institute.
