Volkhard Precht

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Volkhard Precht (born June 19, 1930 in Lauscha ; † 2006 ibid) was a German art glass blower, glass designer and glass artist.

Life

Volkhard Precht worked in the workshops of his father Ernst Precht and learned the trade of glass blower from him . (In contrast to the glassmaker , the glassblower works “in front of the lamp”, that is, he works his glass object in front of the open burner.) He also completed a qualification course at the technical college for applied arts in Schneeberg and became a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR - an important professional recognition in the GDR. In 1959 he took over the management of the family business from his father.

At the end of the fifties he realized small sculptures made of full glass and thus reached the limits of what is possible with lamp glass technology. In 1963, with the support of experienced glassmakers, he built his own small melting furnace - the first studio glass furnace in Europe. ( Erwin Eisch built his studio glass stove in 1965.)

Volkhard Precht is therefore one of the pioneers of the studio glass movement . However, this term was not known in the GDR and it was only in the 1970s that it learned about the roughly simultaneous developments in the USA and Western Europe.

His work can be found in numerous museums around the world.
