Volkmar (Paderborn)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Volkmar (also Folkmar ) († February 17, 983 ) was Bishop of Paderborn from 959 to 983 .

Life

Volkmar probably came from a Saxon noble family. He had previously been a Benedictine monk in Corvey . With him, a monk climbed the Paderborn cathedra for the first time. King Otto I, who had always been close to Corvey Abbey, probably played an important role in this. The Paderborn bishop was not identical with Abbot Volkmar I , but probably entered the monastery during his term in office. After taking over power, Otto II confirmed the rights of the diocese, in particular the free election of bishops, at the express request of Volkmar. For this purpose, the bishop made a special trip to Otto's whereabouts at the time. He gave the cathedral a six hundred pound golden image of the cross, which was later lost. To the detriment of the diocese of Paderborn, Corvey obtained from Benedict VII. The confirmation of the right to immunity. As a former monk, Volkmar did not defend himself against this.
