Rethar (also Rather , Rothar , Ratar ; † March 6, 1009 ) was Bishop of Paderborn .

There is little reliable evidence of Rethar's origins. He was bishop since 983. According to later reports, he was ordained in Speyer . During his term of office, a fire caused the destruction of the older Paderborn bishops' documents. The title of ownership of the Paderborn bishops was granted in 1001 by Emperor Otto III. approved. In the throne controversy of 1002 he paid homage to Heinrich II. His wife Kunigunde was crowned in Paderborn by Archbishop Willigis of Mainz in the same year . The future emperor immediately confirmed the rights of the diocese. However, as elsewhere, the bishops' right to vote was excluded from this. In 1005 the bishop took part in the Dortmund Synod . In 1007 Rethar was involved in settling the dispute between Willigis von Mainz and Bishop Bernward von Hildesheim . In the same year he was one of the witnesses to the founding of Bamberg . It cannot be proven that Rethar was involved in Otto III's Italian trains. and Henry II was present. It is possible that he was involved in the war of Otto III in 992 . against the Slavs involved in the Elbe.

Rethar strongly promoted the cult of Saint Liborius within his diocese . He supported the Reichsstift Schildesche . According to recent findings, he was more involved in the new construction of Paderborn Cathedral than the Vita Meinwerci from the 12th century indicates.

One in 1005 by Pope John XVIII. The document issued for Paderborn is the oldest papal document that has survived in the original outside of Italy.

Rethar is buried in Paderborn Cathedral.
