Vita Meinwerci

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vita Meinwerci episcopi Patherbrunnensis is the biography of Bishop Meinwerk of Paderborn († June 5, 1036 ) and thus the first biography of a Paderborn bishop; it was written in Middle Latin around 1165 . The author cannot be clearly determined, for a long time the abbot Konrad von Abdinghof (1142–1173) was considered the author in research, today it is assumed that the vita was commissioned by a Paderborn bishop - either Bernhard I. von Oesede (1127– 1160) or his successor Evergis (1160–1178) - originated in Abdinghof Monastery.

The Vita Meinwerci is one of the essential sources for the history of the last years of the Liudolfinger family , even if the author failed several times to create a correct chronology from the sources he used for the compilation. The original manuscript is now in Kassel .
