history

The main office of the savings and loan fund, in the Menting restaurant, between 1891 and 1957

In 1891, 43 citizens from Altschermbeck, Schermbeck, Damm, Bricht and Overbeck founded the Schermbecker savings and loan association, a registered cooperative with unlimited liability. The board of directors was made up of Franz Xaver Prinz, W. Spellmann-Rittmann, W. Geldermann, Wilhelm Hennewig and Joh. Bartelt, as well as Carl Koch, W. Kemper, Heinrich Ribbekamp, B. Schulte-Wieschen and August Hackenesch on the supervisory board. August Böckenhoff ran the business as Rendant.

The Menting restaurant remained the business premises of the savings and loan fund until 1957. When the bank's own building on Mittelstrasse was put into operation on March 15, 1957, the machine bookkeeping also replaced the manual. Years of accelerated upswing followed.

Electronic data processing with punch cards was introduced in the early 1960s. After ten years in-house, the first extension and conversion was due because the rapidly growing volume of business in the original premises could not be coped with. In 1970 a branch was opened in the then new residential area of Kerkerfeld.

The most important event in the recent past was the creation of the new Volksbank Schermbeck in 1988 by merging with Volksbank Gahlen. Volksbank Gahlen was founded in 1902. In addition to the main office in Gahlen, it brought a branch in Dorsten-Östrich, which was closed in 1995.
