history

The Volkshaus in Bremen around 1928

After the Bremen trade unions were initially housed in a house on Faulenstraße , a large new building with over 400 rooms was built on Nordstraße from 1926 to 1928 according to plans by architect Richard Jansen . In the building there was space for the union secretariats, a library, the Chamber of Labor , a workers' bench and a youth home. There was also business premises for a hotel, a restaurant, a bowling alley and a non-profit funeral home. On the brick facade of the building there were eight sculptures by Bernhard Hoetger , from the cycle of life under the stigma of work , which depicted oppressed workers.

As a result of the seizure of power , the Volkshaus was searched by the police in April 1933. She arrested several union and chamber officials. The Hoetger figures were removed by resolution of the Bremen Senate on March 29, 1933 and melted down “in the interests of public safety and order”. The building was then taken over by the National Socialist German Labor Front . In 1938 the city bought the Volkshaus and used it for various authorities during the Second World War. In July 1944 the building was badly damaged in an air raid , but rebuilt after the war - with minor changes. In 1979 six of the Hoetger figures were reattached in a replica by the sculptor Manfred Lohrengel .

The Volkshaus is a listed building . After an extensive renovation of the building between 2005 and 2007, the building is used again by the Office for Social Services.
