Volkssternwarte Bonn

The Volkssternwarte Bonn is a voluntary operated observatory in Bonn . It is located on the grounds of the Old Observatory of the University of Bonn in the southern part of the city .

In 1972 the Volkssternwarte Bonn was founded as a registered association with the aim of spreading popular astronomy and supporting amateur astronomy . The association has around 160 members (as of August 2008).

The club building, christened "Refractory", is the dome of the large refractor of the former university observatory, built in 1899 . Today there are u. a. a library and a small exhibition on current astronomical topics. The building is from the country since 1975, North Rhine-Westphalia rented and stands as a monument under monument protection .

The Volkssternwarte Bonn regularly conducts public observations of the starry sky and the sun . In addition, lectures on astronomical topics are offered.
